Thank you for choosing Southside Dental
Why Do Wisdom Teeth need to be Removed?
Because our jaws are smaller than our ancestors, our wisdom teeth do not have enough room to fit in our mouths properly. This can can cause the wisdom teeth to become impacted, which can crowd other teeth and cause them to chip or break. They can cause gum disease or can decay due to their difficulty of cleaning. They may also cause cysts, which can destroy the jaw or teeth surrounding the wisdom teeth. Very rarely do wisdom teeth grow properly.
Pre Surgery:
Our request is that you have a companion to drive you to your appointment and be there to pick you up following, especially when have 2 or more wisdom teeth extracted at one time. If a ride is not available to you please inform one of our business team members to arrange for a courtesy ride from our office.

Procedure for Removal:
First, we will evaluate your medical and dental history. YOu will have a tooth examination and two types of x-rays may be taken. Either a panographic x-ray, which provides an overall view of your mouth, and/or an intraoral x-ray, which examines individual teeth.
Removal is usually an outpatient procedure
Type and length of procedure will be determined on how developed your wisdom teeth are
It is recommended you do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to surgery
A sedative can be prescribed for you to help you relax or nitrous oxide sedation is available
You will receive an anesthetic to numb the area around the wisdom teeth
Once you are fully relaxed and our mouth is numb, the surgery will begin. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, an incision be made to remove the teeth and you will receive stitches. If they have emerged through the gum, they will probably be removed with no incisions.
